Summer is unfortunately coming to a close and it's about time to start preparing for fall and winter ahead. Thankfully, fall-time comes before the snowy winters in Utah. Brisk mornings, college football, pumpkin-spice flavorings, and comfy sweatshirts will begin to trickle through the door within the next few weeks.

What can you do to your house, to be prepared for colder weather? Below are a few tips to prepare for autumn and the exciting times that are coming!

1. Reverse your ceiling fans

Have you ever heard of the term "warm air rises, and cool air sinks"? This is true, especially during the summertime. One tip that is useful during the cooler months is to reverse the blades on your ceiling fan. This will help your home stay at a comfortable temperature and allow that warmer air to sink.

2. Clear out your gutters

This tip can be used before fall-time and also as the weather gets colder and winter finds itself on your front porch. Make sure that leaves and other debris are out of the gutter to keep unwanted water out of your house. It's important to make sure that the gutters aren't being restricted from doing what they are built to do.

3. Check your windows and doors for air pockets

Throughout the summer, seals on windows and doors could've become damaged or completely broken. It's important to get those fixed before cold drafts make their way through your home and freeze you out. This doesn't even begin to mention how your bills will skyrocket due to the heat escaping your home.

4. Check the furnace and boiler

Get your furnace and boiler checked out to make sure that it will run smoothly throughout the cold months of the year. Fall-time is a great time because you still have enough warmth to be comfortable if things need fixing.

5. Wipe down and clean any outdoor furniture

Long summers can cause dust and dirt to get on your outdoor furniture. Before you decide to store the cushions, or tarp up the outside table, give them a good clean to make your life easier when springtime returns.
