Utah is one of the most unique and underrated states in the entire United States. It includes all four seasons, amazing sunsets, vast array of recreational activities, entertainment options, rich religious history, National Parks, and mountain ranges that combine the jagged edges of the Rockies and Wasatch, and the sandy shelves of the Southern Utah Hematite Red Rock. What makes Utah amazing in my eyes, is the people. The people in Utah are commonly known to be kind, welcoming, inclusive, and understanding. Utah is recognized across the country as one of the safest and best places to live (Worldpopulationreview.com, theHill.com, wallethub.com, usnews.com). In this series, "Why Utah?" I'll explore why Utah is a great place for you and your family to live.

Last, but not least: Southern Utah

Southern Utah is home to some of the state's most picturesque landscapes, and National Parks as far as the eye can see. Southern Utah is known for being the warmest section of the state, having hot summers, and a winter that seems to be designed for snowbirds.

There is a wide variety of entertainment found in Southern Utah, including some of the most breathtaking golf courses, to some of the most blue lakes found in the state. Southern Utah is home to stunning red rock Mountain Ranges, created from minerals made of iron oxides (also known as hematite). These mountains provide hikes, biking trails, outdoor recreation. Lake Powell also provides water activities while looking up at the shelves of these chalky red rock formations. Southern Utah is also home to many National Parks, including Zions, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capital Reef. Not a fan of the outdoorsy stuff? No worries at all. Southern Utah is also home to many museums, outlet malls, restaurants, and concert venues.

Southern Utah is home to two division one Universities in Utah Tech University (St. George, UT), and Southern Utah University (Cedar City, UT). Both schools are beloved by their local communities and embraced by the state as a whole. Both schools provide small class sizes, and professors with impressive backgrounds. K-12 schools are also recognized as being some of the best in the state. Southern Utah has over 20 different high schools that include children from all over the southern third. Most teachers are local and have a good understanding of the communities they serve.

Job opportunities have an expansive range in Southern Utah, including farming, National Park Services, recreation, real estate, accounting, medical, law, retail, restaurants, automotive services, etc. If you can dream it, there's a good chance that you can find it in the Southern-most part of the state. The state of Utah has one of the best unemployment rates in the country at 2.1%, and has plenty of genre's of businesses available for any interests you might have.

As far as religion, a sense of community, and safety goes, each of these things can easily be found in Southern Utah. Southern Utah, just like the rest of the state, has plenty of churches available for all belief systems including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholicism, etc. The most common religion is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints earliest built temples can be found in the heart of St. George, Utah, with its starch white exterior complimenting the surrounding red rock. People who reside in this area are known for their sense of community, friendliness, and safety. Southern Utah has many visitors come through each year from all over the world. The local communities treat those visitors, and their neighbors with respect, and dignity. You can rest easy knowing that the crime rate is low, and the local's hearts are big.

Another nice thing about Southern Utah, is that it's a group of communities far enough away from big cities to have that small town, close knit, American dream feel to it. It is also only a few hours away from some of the biggest hubs in the Continental United States. From St. George, Utah; Las Vegas, Nevada is only an hour and forty five minutes away. Salt Lake City, Utah is four hours away. Phoenix, Arizona is six and a half hours away, and Los Angeles, California is five hours and fifty minutes away. From Moab, Utah; Denver, Colorado is five and a half hours away, and Albuquerque, New Mexico is only six hours away. (All estimated times are calculated by driving. Flights can get you to these big cities much faster.)
