Sensational Scents

Just like an earlier article that I wrote on paying attention to noise factors when buying a home, another sense to pay attention to is your smell.

Buying a home can be an exciting time for many people, some may even be anxious when making this major purchase. When over-excitement or anxiousness are made evident within someone, sometimes paying attention to our other senses take a back seat. Something as easy as using your nose can make a difference in your overall happiness down the road.

Animals are cute, lovable, and friendly creatures that make us happy every day. But, one thing that you need to be aware of, is that animals can come with unfamiliar smells. It might not be a problem for some people, but for others, it could make them want to move out of their new home as quickly as possible.

Food factories and restaurants can also give off daily smells. I personally would love to live next to a Cadbury chocolate factory, but others might be turned off by the constant smell of that chocolatey goodness.

Another smell to be aware of is tobacco or other drugs in close proximity to your home. Some might love the smell of tobacco on a crisp autumn evening, and others may not like it. Whichever side of the fence you fall on could help determine whether or not you'd like to purchase the home.

Nearby fields of lavender or sage may uplift people's happiness because of the aromas that surround a new house. Other people may find those scents to be a trigger for headaches and a cause for allergies.

Lastly, sewage plants. I don't know of anyone who likes this specific scent, but if that's your mojo, then by all means, buy a house close to one of these places. If you're like me, you'll want to pay attention to where these local plants are located so you don't find yourself waking up to that horrendous smell each morning.

Although it's oftentimes overlooked during the homebuying process, it's important to take a whiff of the air next time you visit your next potential home.
